PETALING JAYA: The Bar Council has never been, is not and will never be “anti” any religion, said its president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

She said to harbour such notions would run counter to the council’s core values.

“The Bar Council believes in the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and international human rights norms.

“None of these values runs counter to any religious tenets,” she said in a statement yesterday.

Ambiga was responding to the furore that had erupted on the planned Bar Council forum on Aug 9 to discuss legal issues arising from a person’s conversion to Islam.

The forum was aborted shortly after it started because of pressure from a group of about 500 protesters from various groups.

She said that if one had looked at the programme and speakers invited and heeded various statements issued prior to the forum, it would have been apparent that those labelling the forum “anti-Islam” were plainly wrong.
