KUALA LUMPUR: The Bar Council supports the call by Raja Dr Nazrin Shah for a
“judicial renaissance”.
“The council also welcomes and shares the views expressed by His Royal Highness
on the supremacy of the Constitution and the importance of the doctrine of
separation of powers.
“As a blueprint for the future of the judiciary, the message is timely and
compelling. It represents the aspirations and expectations of the Bar and the
members of the public for judicial reform,” said council chairman Ambiga
Sreenevasan yesterday.
She said this in an immediate response to the speech delivered by the Raja Muda
of Perak at the opening of the annual Conference of Judges in Putrajaya.
Ambiga also welcomed the positive comments of Chief Justice Datuk Abdul Hamid
Mohamed with regard to the call by newly appointed de facto law minister Datuk
Zaid Ibrahim for the Government to apologise in relation to the 1988 judicial
crisis.
“The council is further pleased to see that the judiciary is open to the setting
up of a judicial appointments commission.
“We are of the view that this is the immediate step that must be taken to show
commitment to judicial reform, judicial independence and judicial excellence,”
she said.
“We agree with the Chief Justice that the appointment of the members of a
judicial commission is critical and we also agree that they must be persons of
integrity who are knowledgeable, incorruptible, fair and without any vested
interest.”
