The Ethics & Professional Standards Course comprises lectures on specific topics on the first day and a 2 ˝ hours written examination on the second day, followed by a luncheon. The course was not designed with the aim to teach substantive law but to make the pupils more aware of their ethical duties and responsibilities and to appreciate the need and rationale for various rules that govern the practice of the profession. Every pupil seeking admission to the Bar must pass the Ethics & Professional Standards Course Exam.

The Course is held every month at the Bar Council's Auditorium. Apart from the Bar Council, Penang and Johore also conduct the Course twice a year.  Approximately 1,300 pupils sit for the Course every year, of which about 95% sit for their exams at the Bar Council Auditorium.

A total of 75 pupils attended the Ethics & Professional Course on 9 September and 41 sat for the written examination on 10 September 2009.

The following lectures were presented on the first day (9 September):

1 Role of the Bar & Lawyers in Civil Society Ms Latheefa Koya
2 Professional Ethics Mr Sanjeev Kumar

4 Duty to and in Court, Candour Decorum & Contempt  Mr Alex Chang
5 Mediation Mr Belden Premaraj

Mdm Chew Swee Yoke gave a talk to the 30 pupils who attended the luncheon at the Royal Selangor Club after the written examination.  According to Mdm Chew, the essence of a lawyer is to have integrity and doing one's homework. As to what makes a good lawyer, she advised that one must have a feeling for the Law.
