Bar Council Ethics and Professional Standards Course for Pupils (24 and 25 Feb 2010)

The second session of the Bar Council’s Ethics and Professional Standards Course (Ethics Course) for the year was conducted at the Auditorium on 24 and 25 Feb 2010 (Wednesday and Thursday). A total of 116 pupils in chambers attended the Ethics Course on the first day and 143 pupils sat for the written examination on 25 Feb 2010.

The following lecturers presented these topics on 24 Feb 2010:

1 Role of the Bar and Lawyers in Civil Society	Richard Wee
2 Professional Ethics	Raphael Tay
3 Solicitors’ Accounts and Undertakings	Isharidah Ishak Tadin
4 Duty to and in Court, Candour, Decorum and Contempt	Alex Chang
5 Mediation	Hendon Mohamed
6 Duty to Client – Professional Liability, Fiduciary Duty and Risk Management	Inderjit Singh

After the examination on Thursday, the pupils adjourned to attend a luncheon at the Royal Selangor Club. Dipendra Harshad Rai was the guest speaker and his advice to the pupils in chambers was to be passionate about legal practice. He also shared with them some of the principles he has been holding close to his heart in his years of practice such as to always respect the independence of the Bar and to be willing to learn and contribute.

We take this opportunity to thank the lecturers and the speaker for their valuable time, effort and contribution.

The next Ethics Course will be held on 17 and 18 Mar 2010.
