Ban Ki-moonNEW YORK:  The General Assembly of the United Nations has adopted the Security Council's recommendation to appoint Ban Ki-moon, a South Korean, as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations for a term of five years, succeeding Kofi Annan when the latter finishes his current five-year term on January 1.

In his acceptance speech to the Assembly, Mr Ban, 62, said: "My tenure will be marked by ceaseless efforts to build bridges and close divides. Leadership of harmony not division, by example not instruction has served me well so far. I intend to stay the course as Secretary-General."

Earlier, Mr Ban emerged as the favourite among six other candidates in all the four informal polls in the Security Council. He will be the second Asian to hold this position, after Myanmar's U Thant from 1961 to 1971.

Mr. Annan said  Mr Ban would be "a man with a truly global mind at the helm of the world's only universal organization" and he described Mr. Ban as "a future secretary-general who is exceptionally attuned to the sensitivities of countries and constituencies in every continent."
