IPOH, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Umno vice- president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has urged the authorities to invoke the Internal Security Act (ISA) or withdraw the citizenship of the four lawyers and four activists involved in an illegal march in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said their action showed that they were traitors to the country for going against the order of the authorities not to proceed with the illegal march.

"I support their arrest as their action was extreme. Their stubbornness to go ahead with the illegal march could cause fear among the people, and perhaps even among the investors," he told reporters after attending the wedding of the daughter of 4B Youth Movement Malaysia general secretary, Datuk Wira Jamaludin Abdul Rahim here today.

Mohd Ali was asked to comment on the arrest of four lawyers and four activists for holding an illegal march from in front of the Sogo Departmental Store in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman to the Bar Council building in Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur this morning.

The organisers of the march did not obtain a police permit to hold it and had also ignored the order to disperse.

About 50 people, including lawyers, activists, bloggers and members of non-governmental organisations, had gathered since 7.30am in front of Sogo and marched along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman towards the Bar Council building in conjunction with World Human Rights Day tomorrow.

Mohd Ali, who is also Melaka Chief Minister, said the action by the authorities was necessary to prevent more street demonstrations from being organised by irresponsible groups.

"Such illegal demonstrations or gatherings could threaten public order.

"I also think that these gatherings are linked to the opposition parties which are becoming increasingly desperate on hearing talks that the general election would be held soon.

"They are willing to do anything to win votes," he said.

Should the famous son in law of the PM...
written by Damian Yeo Shen Li, Monday, December 10 2007 12:26 am

Should the famous son in law of the PM 's citizenship be revoked too?

I shall say AMEN to that.

He went into the streets demonstrating and calling the Secretary of State for US, Miss Rice, that she is not welcomed in Malaysia. It was a street protest which I believe, organised without a police permit.

We need proper guardians
written by Tan Peek Guat, Monday, December 10 2007 08:11 am

The facial expression of this politician is sufficient to scare away all investors.

The authorities ought not fault the lawyers for attempting to do that. His facial expression clearly expresses the mean intentions of the heart; and on account of the political position that he holds, that similar expression is also, therefore, a reflection of that of our nation towards anyone, be they the intending investors, or fellow Malaysians. What better ways can there be in attempting to achieve their goals? Are such people with such goals patriotic Malaysians?

In celebrations, let us all celebrate in the concept of brotherhood, love and care. Therefore, as guardians of peace and security, the police ought not have arrested our lawyers unless they have committed any crimes, considered 'criminal' by our citizens' opinions.

It is indeed a sad day for Malaysians. Why not arrest the illegal immigrants who cause so much unhappiness and crimes among our beloved Malaysians, and yet, the police is too short handed to arrest them nor control their undesired illegal entries.

Whose Citizenship to strip?
written by Ding Chu Teck, Monday, December 10 2007 09:49 am

The following people's citizen should be stripped off:

1. Corrupt politicians
2. Seditious politicians
3. Racists & religious extremists
4. Politicians who call for the withdrawal of patriots' citizenship

Tell me, who are the extremists and who are not?

It's the ISA
written by Puteri Shehnaz Majid, Monday, December 10 2007 11:17 am

What would cause fear among investors is the continued existence and persistent use of the ISA.

so the economy seems to be the paramount considera
written by Alex Tan Ken Seng, Monday, December 10 2007 11:59 am

Money seems to be foremost in the mind of our government, not fundamental human rights.

As for Peek Guat saying that the politician's face is enough to scare away investors, I don't think Ali Rustam is as scary as our ex CJ Ahmad Fairuz. Now that face (in the photos featured in this website) definitely looks like a perturbed potato.

As for Ali Rustam saying that the opposition are "willing to do anything to get votes", isn't that hypocritical? Just look at the cover stories in the govt-influenced NST the last few days. No wonder NST's circulation is so low nowadays.

By the way, to digress a bit, about this thing about our govt politicians saying that so-and-so from PAS or DAP or PKR is just out for "political mileage", I just want to say - they're politicians for God's sake, OF COURSE they're doing it for political mileage! Do you think they're doing it to save the dolphins?

Sick Man
written by Ng Hong Chai, Monday, December 10 2007 01:24 pm

Rumours have it he is suffering from some serious disease. That being the case I think that we may want to be generous with him and let him say as much as he likes. Is the photo his recent one? He does not look that healthy.

The Real Heroes Ostracised Whilst the Crooks Made
written by Lim Yeeu Ren, Monday, December 10 2007 02:54 pm

I received the message early this morning when I switched on my handphone to discover that Edmund amongst others were arrested yesterday. I am deeply saddened. Could not make it to court this morning hence spoke to Richard Wee when he was in court just to find out how Edmund was doing.

Makes me sick to know that one of the UMNO Vice-Presidents have called for the lawyers & other activists arrested to be stripped of their citizenship or have the ISA used against them. Here are the few heroic ones who try to make the country a better place to live in and they are ostracised for their commitment, believes, efforts & heroic deeds. Mind you, some parties probably arent human, hence they dont seem to see a need for Human Rights advocacy. What the F#@+ man? That aint the way to treat people.

However, at the same time there seem to be law breakers every night on 2 wheels & etc. These are glorified as Mat Rempits who do the hell possible to wreck all the peace and endanger lives at the same time being called heroes as some of them are sent to the North Pole as paratroopers & such. What is the country coming to. Spend more time arresting the real wrong doers and not those who stand up for the weak. Bloody f+^%#@! cowards!

We can all name many who who should be stripped of their citizenships! Corrupted & abuser of powers are also TRAITORS for going against the order of authorities! Who sets what standards for whom here?

This is not the Malaysia we want!

Carpe Diem,

STATEMENT NOT A COGITATION
written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng, Monday, December 10 2007 05:01 pm

Many politicians, especially bankrupt politicians, have never been known to be endowed with the wisdom to know that the Almighty is present among us all the time. So, they play God, and some even think that they are God - forgetting that power is ever so fleeting and ephemeral.

At law, there is such a thing called the Doctrine of Proportionality. For offences such as these - and we are not even conceding that this is an offence bearing in mind what the Police Commission and Suhakam has said on Section 27 of the Police Act requiring a police permit for a peaceful assembly - if any country were to strip off the citizenship of the offenders (assuming that they are found guilty of the minor offence), then that citizenship cannot be the prized document that it is always meant to be.

On that ground alone, I beg to differ with the statement of this chief minister of a state. In fact, I decry the fact that instead of using his platform to give us measured cogitations, he is giving us what I term as "intemperate statements."
