KUALA LUMPUR:
Datuk Abdul Hamid Mohamad has been appointed the new chief justice and Federal Court judge Tan Sri Zaki Azmi will fill the vacant position of Court of Appeal president.

Abdul Hamid was the acting chief justice after the retirement of Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim on Nov 1.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the 65-year-old Abdul Hamid's appointment took effect from Nov 1 while Zaki's would be determined later.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin had consented to both appointments on the advice of the prime minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers as provided for under Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution.

Abdullah said the Federal Court was in discussion with Istana Negara on when the instruments of appointment would be handed over to the two judges.
Abdul Hamid, a father of four, will take the oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Born in Permatang Tinggi Bakar Bata, Kepala Batas, Penang, Abdul Hamid obtained his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Singapore in 1969. He then joined the Legal and Judicial Service after graduating in the same year.

Abdul Hamid had served as magistrate, president of the Sessions Court, Assistant Director of the Legal Aid Bureau, Deputy Registrar of High Court Malaya, State Legal Advisor of Kelantan and Perak, senior Federal counsel of the Department of Inland Revenue and head of Prosecution at the Attorney General's Chambers.

On May 1, 1990, he was the appointed judicial commissioner of High Court of Malaya.

Two years later, he was made judge of the High Court of Malaya.

In 2000, Abdul Hamid was appointed judge of the Court of Appeal and in 2003, he was elevated to the Federal Court.

Married to Datin Hamidah Choong Abdullah, Abdul Hamid was also appointed as a judge of the Special Court established under Article 182(1) of the Federal Constitution for a period of two years from April 1, 2007.

Zaki, a lawyer, is the son of former Lord President Tun Azmi Mohamed, who enjoyed a distinguished career culminating in the top post in 1968.

Zaki joined the Judicial and Legal Service in 1969 and served, among others, as a magistrate, Sessions Court president and a Senior Federal Counsel with the Home Affairs Ministry before joining a legal firm in 1985.

Zaki, who was appointed to the Royal Commission on the Police Force in 2004, has also served as Umno Disciplinary (Technical) Committee chairman and Umno Selection Committee secretary.

He was also a panel member of the Umno Disciplinary Board of Appeal and the National Sports Council adviser.
