A brief summary of the Malaysian
Bar’s 72nd Annual General Meeting (“AGM”), held on 17 Mar 2018 at
Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel, follows below.
• The
quorum of 500 Members was achieved at approximately 10:10 am. The
Chairman, George Varughese (President of the Malaysian Bar) called the
meeting to order at 10:34 am.
• Six resolutions were ultimately adopted by Members of the Bar:
(1) Resolution Regarding the Discovery of "Death Camps" in Perlis;
(2) Resolution Regarding the Continuing Professional Development Scheme;
(3) Resolution Calling for the Total Abolition of the Death Penalty;
(4) Resolution on Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 — More Sentencing Discretion to Judges and Disappointment About Delay in Putting into Force;
(5) Resolution for the Introduction of “Anticipatory Bail” under the Malaysian Criminal Procedure Code; and
(6) Resolution on Electronic Voting (E–Voting).
A total of 836 Members registered
their attendance at the AGM, which was adjourned at 3:04 pm.
In the first Bar Council meeting held
immediately after the AGM, the following Office Bearers retained their
positions for the 2018/2019 term:
