KUALA LUMPUR, Tues.: A total of 38 non-governmental organisations including Dong Zong, ALIRAN, HAKAM, MTUC, and SUARAM today called on the Government to implement the recommendations of the Report of the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police immediately as it had been long-overdue.

In a joint statement issued today, they said though there were some shortcomings and contradictions in the Report, the Report when seen in totality was comprehensive, progressive and reformist in nature. The group said the Government should implement in particular the following recommendations immediately:

1. Recommendation 12 in Chapter 6 which is establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission.

2. All the recommendations in Chapter 8 which will encourage and enhance investigative policing.

3. All the recommendations in Chapter 10 which will encourage and enhance policing which comply with human rights norms and obligations.

"We urge strong political will by the Government in adhering to the Report so as not to have the good and tireless work of the Commissioners in producing the Report go to waste," the group added.
