ALOR STAR: Two lawyers were detained for allegedly stealing several court
files and the investigation papers (IP) related to an on-going murder case at
the High Court here.
The two suspects, said to be partners from the same law firm,
were detained when they turned up at the district police headquarters on Tuesday
evening.
Kota Star deputy police chief DSP Feisal Libertus Abdullah said police had also
recovered the missing documents from the two suspects.
The lawyers, aged 27 and 30, are based in Butterworth. They have been remanded
until Dec 2.
They are expected to be charged with theft in a building and face a maximum 10
years in jail with a fine upon conviction.
The documents were found missing by deputy public prosecutor
Murtazadi Amran who was about to present his case against three men charged with
murder.
The case was up for mention before judge Datuk Zaimal Azam Abd Ghani. The three
accused were present but their lawyer did not show up.
It is learnt that the suspects were in court on behalf of the accused's counsel
but they went missing before proceedings began. It was about then that Murtazadi
discovered that the IP was also missing.
Murtazadi continued with his case and lodged a report immediately after
proceedings.
Police then contacted the lawyers and when they arrived at the Kota Star police
station, they were arrested.
Feisal said they were still investigating the motive for the theft.
The murder took place in Kulim last year and three men were charged.
