The Penang Bar held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, 24 February 2010, at the Cititel Hotel Penang, which was attended by 245 members, well exceeding the required quorum of 51.
Mr. Mureli Navaratnam was returned unopposed as Chairman for the third consecutive year, exceeding the conventional two-year term, as the Penang Bar will be hosting the Malaysia-Singapore Bench and Bar Games this year and preparations are well underway under his leadership.
The following were elected as Committee Members for the 2010/2011 term:
* Mr. Devkumar Kumaraendran * Ms. Jo-Anne Leslie De Vries * Ms. Lee Kim Noor * Mr. Parthipan Vairavan * Mr. Ung Chirt Kye * Mr. Harcharan Singh * Mr. Lee Guan Tong * En. Mohamed Ezri Bin Abdul Wahab * Mr. Nicholas Tan Soon Teik
As Ms. Lalitha Menon did not seek re-election, the post of Bar Council Representative saw a contest between two members of the outgoing Committee, Mr. E. Gnasegaran and En. Abdul Fareed Bin Abdul Gafoor, with the former being declared the winner with 154 votes to En. Fareed’s 81.
Among the main issues discussed during the AGM were problems faced by members with the Court Tracking System, decorum and legal practice issues as well as dealings with the police.
