BC 2009/2010 Candidate: Dato' Haji Hamzah Bin Mohd Kassim PDF Print E-mail

BC 2009/2010 Candidate: Dato' Haji Hamzah Bin Mohd KassimAs one of the proposers of Dato’ Hamzah, I am pleased to say a few words about him. I have known him for more than 30 years since our ‘varsity’ days at the University of Malaya. I support Dato’ Hamzah for one strong reason. Beneath the quiet, unassuming facade of this gentleman lays a committed social activist, who has much to contribute to the Malaysian Bar.

He graduated from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree in 1976 and was called to the Malaysian Bar on 11th December 1976. After working with Urban Development Authority (UDA) for 2 years, he joined the Negeri Sembilan Development Corporation and worked there for 3 years. In 1981, he commenced law practice in Seremban.

He was conferred a Fellowship by the Institute of International Law on 7th December 2003 and an Honorary Fellowship by the Institute of General Management on 14th May 2005. He has been active in NGO work since his University days, and had been detained for 5 months under the Internal Security Act during the 1974 national students’ demonstration fighting for students’ rights and national issues then, in particular, the (Baling Poverty) and (Tasek Utara) issues. He is an active member of the Malaysian Bar. He has been a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Malaysian Bar (1995), a member of Negeri Sembilan Bar Committee (1997-1998), a member of the Syariah Law Committee of the Bar Council (current), and a Mediator registered with the Bar Council.

He basically agrees with the Bar Council on the need to reform and review a number of Government Acts including the Internal Security Act (ISA).

He has served as an advisor and Office Bearer of various associations, including the following:- Chairman of the Negeri Sembilan Youth Co-operative Society (1997-2000), President of the Senawang Rotary Club (1991-1992), Advisory Board Member of the King George V Secondary School in Seremban (1989-1990), Councillor of the Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) (1995-1999) and member of GAPENA, the national writers’ association. For his various contributions to the state of Negeri Sembilan, he was bestowed the title of Dato’ by DYMM the Yang di Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan on 19 July 2007.

He has written a number of articles and papers on Malay Dispora and has recently being awarded the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Community and Economic Development by Akamai University.
