Roger Tan Only 23 in Bar Council elections

KUALA LUMPUR, Sun: Only 23 members filed their nomination papers to run for the Bar Council elections for the 2009/2010 term when nominations closed last Friday, October 31 compared to the last few years when the annual election used to attract more than 30 members out of 12,600 members of the Malaysian Bar.

Two current Bar Councillors will not be seeking re-election. They are Roger Tan and Yasmeen bte. Hj. Muhamad Shariff.

Tan who has been a Council member since 2004 has served in various positions, notably the Deputy Chair of IT & Cyberlaws Committee, Chairman of the Conveyancing Practice Committee, Chairman of the Solicitors Remuneration Order Enforcement Committee, Organising Chairman of the 14th Malaysian Law Conference and Chairman of the National Young Lawyers Committee. Tan will also gradually retire as the Malaysian Bar Webmaster or better known as 'MBW' from December next month so that the IT staff from the Secretariat will take over the management of the Malaysian Bar Website when Tan's term ends in March next year.

When contacted, Tan said: "I have already given my best in the last 4 years in serving the Bar. It's time to move on so that others will have an opportunity to do so."

Yasmeen bte. Hj. Muhamad Shariff Yasmeen currently chairs the Islamic Finance Committee and she has also served on the Council for several years.

When contacted, Yasmeen explained her reason for not running this year: "Basically, it is to allow others a chance to serve the Malaysian Bar and also because the classes for the Executive Diploma in Islamic Banking organised by the Bar Council clash with the Bar Council monthly meetings on Saturdays and I will fail in my duty if I do not attend the Bar Council meetings."

Members of the Bar will receive the ballot papers this week by post and they may vote for not more than 12 persons - the number of seats available for the 2009/2010 term at the national level. Pursuant to section 50 of the Legal Profession Act, 1976, members must cast and return their  ballots on or before November 30, 2008. The ballots will be counted on December 1, 2008 and hopefully the results will be announced on the same day.

The newly elected members will only assume office after the next annual general meeting of the Bar which is scheduled to be held in March next year. They will be joined by 22 other State Bar Chairs and Representatives after the State Bars hold their AGMs in February next year.

A special section has also been created for the Bar Council Elections. Pursuant to the Resolution passed at the AGM held on March 17, 2001, each candidate's proposers have also prepared a brief write-up of their proposed candidate. To view the write-ups, please click on the respective picture or name of the candidate as shown below.

Members may also post questions or queries to the respective candidates but the candidates are entitled but not obliged to respond to them.

Roger Tan will be missed!
written by Richard Wee Thiam Seng, Monday, November 03 2008 10:37 pm

In my view, I feel we will miss Roger Tan the most. He has revamped this website, from some ordinary looking webpage to what it is now. I just hope whoever who takes over the website will try to retain the high standards he has placed on this website.

Thanks Roger and all the best to you.

May God Bless You.

Yes, Roger, you need not work too hard.

It is, after all, a thankless job; and with the "Ketuanan Bangsa Melayu", you are there only because you are not paid.

If you are paid, UMNO youth would have demonstrated to insist upon your vacation of your seat. Free service is acceptable, not otherwise.

Furthermore, with Salleh Abbas accepting the 'consolation' he received, while lashing out at the Bar Council Members further enhance the fact that it is indeed a thankless job so unnecessarily cast upon the members by themselves.

It also clearly shows that what you get forthwith will be pain without any pleasure. Therefore, 'good-bye' and 'thank you' for your good adherence to duties (assigned to yourself, by yourself, and kept to the faith by yourself).

May God Bless You.
