At the request of the Judicial and Legal Training Institute (ILKAP), Hendon Mohamed, Deputy Chairperson of the Bar Council’s Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (AADR) Committee, together with Gunavathi S, a committee member, gladly hosted a meeting with some foreign participants who were then undergoing a nine-day Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme entitled “Options and Skills in Dispute Resolution” from 21 June to 1 July 2010 at ILKAP.

The delegates who were present at the meeting, held on 25 June 2010, were:
(1) Foo Hui Yi, Deputy Director of the Legal Aid Department, Malaysia; (2) Kritananda Naghee Reddy, State Counsel, Attorney-General’s Office and Ministry of Justice, Mauritius; (3) Maria Elena M Hernandez, National Conciliation & Mediation Board, Department of Labour and Employment, Philippines; (4) Mercy Memsah-Addo, Commission on Human Rights & Administrative Justice, Ghana; (5) Pem Bunchhea, Office of the Council of Ministers, Cambodia; (6) Radin Safiee Bastuni, Bruneian Judiciary; (7) Salim Said, Oman; (8) Siddique Ubeiou, Commission on Human Rights, Ghana; (9) Justice Tamer Ahmed Faried, Chief Judge of the Preparing Penal-Egyptian Economic Court; (10) Justice Toure Amadou Bocar, Mali Court of Appeal; (11) Viste Muzu, Lecturer, University of Zimbabwe; (12) Wilkie E Reroma, Philippines; and (13) Yanit Abena Habtermariam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic of Republic of Ethiopia.
The delegates were accompanied by ILKAP’s representatives, namely Shamsudin Abdullah, Director of the Senior Management and Profession Programme, Norashikin Abd Salim and Zazarina Dzulkifli.
Hendon Mohamed briefly explained the history of the Malaysian Mediation Centre as well as the present status of mediation in Malaysia.
At the meeting, there was an exchange of invaluable information concerning the development and status of mediation in each of the respective jurisdictions, which the AADR Committee members took great interest in and found instructive.
The delegates were also informed of the upcoming 2nd AMA Conference, which will be hosted by the Bar Council from on 24 and 25 Feb 2011 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, and will be open to foreign participants. Gunavathi S pointed out that the Conference would cover a wide range of topics as well as practice areas that might be of interest to the delegates.
Hendon Mohamed thanked Shamsudin Abdullah for giving the AADR Committee the opportunity to meet with the foreign delegates, and expressed the Committee’s interest in future visits as well as engagement with ILKAP.
