THE historian's lament is that he or she is often witness to mistakes of the past, and yet is unable to prevent them from recurring. In the end, the historian is cursed with the Cassandra complex and accused of being a tiresome doomsayer.
At the risk of being black-balled from dinner parties, I would like to restate that our country's current state of affairs should remind us of our collective errors in the not-too-distant past. For example, just when we thought that talk of a unity government was dead and buried, this wearisome poltergeist has been resurrected to spook all and sundry.

JUNE 28 – When I was a student at Lincoln's Inn, more years ago than I care to recall, we were told that all decisions obf the House of Lords were final and there was no further appeal; except to the editorial committee of the Law Quarterly Review.
Transposed, mutatis mutandis, into present Malaysian terms, the decisions of the Federal Court are final and without appeal, save to the conscience of my Brother Justice NH Chan.
Many have read his writings that appear at regular intervals on at least two websites. Many have described his criticism as scathing.

“I am asking the senior judge in the Kuala Lumpur High Court to look into it and take the appropriate action,” Tun Zaki Tun Azmi told The Star.
“We have to confirm what actually happened.”
Zaki said this when asked to comment on news reports yesterday of the “rotan” sentence imposed on Muhammad Syafiq Abd Wahab, 20, under Section 293(1)(c) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

JUNE 28 — The continuing furore over Indonesian maids (or domestic helpers, your preference) serves to illustrate that many Malaysians – and Indonesians – are yet to grasp the dynamics of an employer-employee relationship, even if they are already in one at work.
For some inexplicable reason, these individuals have resorted to lowering the worth of their maids to little more than chattel, to be traded and treated any way they see fit. Less than human, and possibly even less than the dogs and cats that they keep at home.
When you hire a maid, you are doing exactly that – hiring someone. Nothing more, nothing less. You do not own them; they are not your slaves; and while they owe you their living, they do not owe you their lives. Paying someone for services rendered does not in turn render you the right to maltreat, abuse, torture, or in any way make their existence miserable.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak said tonight the government would introduce purely merit-based public scholarships by next year, and also indicated his administration’s intent to completely do away with race-based quotas in more sectors.
The prime minister’s remarks at a dinner organised by the Chinese community appear to be designed to win back the support of non-Malay voters for Barisan Nasional (BN).
While his announcement was short on details, it also indicates his administration’s efforts at hijacking Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) more multi-racial platform.

“Homoseksual” bukanlah suatu istilah yang asing bagi masyarakat dunia pada masa kini. Di mana sahaja kita pergi, kita pasti akan bertembung orang dalam golongan ini. Anehnya, apabila kita terserempak dengan mereka, kita bertindak mengasingkan diri kita daripada mereka. Mengapakah kejadian seperti ini harus berlaku? Adakah mereka penjenayah atau pembawa penyakit yang berbahaya?

SETIAP kali terpacul isu perpaduan Melayu, maka riuh rendahlah seluruh alam Melayu.

In my earlier article, I explained the problems that are faced when one spouse in a non Muslim marriage converts to Islam, and attempts to force the other spouse to go to the Syariah Court and to be subjected to Islamic personal law regarding the breakup of their marriage. Now, I will try and suggest some solutions as to how to amend various laws in order to ensure that there is no injustice.Islamic law cannot be implemented on those who do not profess Islam. Islamic law and the Syariah Courts must never interfere in any matter in which a non Muslim is involved or which involves non Islamic law matters. |
