JOHOR BARU: They first tell you that your clothes do not conform with the court house dress code.
Then, security guards at the Johor Baru court house offer to rent the “proper clothing” for between RM5 and RM10. The clothes offered include track pants and skirts for women.
A reporter from The Star, who went to court to verify this allegation, wore a pair of shorts, t-shirt, a cap and sunglasses.
He was stopped by the guards at the entrance and told that he was not adhering to the dress code.
PAS central committee member Datuk Seri Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin is predicting that Perak will hold a state election at a different date from the next general election.
Mohamad Nizar, who was Perak mentri besar until his state government was toppled after three Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives quit the alliance last year, said he had instructed Pakatan to be ready for such an eventuality.
He said for strategic reasons, Barisan Nasional might hold the Sarawak and Perak state elections at the same time and the general election for the other states at a different time.
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court will decide on July 9 on a RM480mil claim over the termination of a contract to upgrade the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s Northtrop F5 Tiger fighter jets.
Justice Abdul Wahab Patail yesterday ordered the plaintiff, Langkawi R&D Academy Sdn Bhd, to file written submissions within two weeks.
He noted that the defendants – the Government, the Defence Ministry secretary-general and the Defence Minister named in the suit – had filed their written submissions.
PUTRAJAYA: The task force overseeing the police investigation into the Aminulrasyid Amzah’s shooting case has proposed that the Malaysian Inspector-General’s Standing Orders (IGSO) be modified to follow the module of Canada’s Ontario police.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Abu Seman Yusop said the task force had come up with two drafts suggesting improvements to the IGSO.
“We have made comparisons with the standard operating procedures of some other countries like the United States and Canada, and we feel we need to follow the module used by the Ontario police.
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court on Friday discharged and acquitted lawyer Karpal Singh of sedition against the Sultan of Perak without calling the Bukit Gelugor MP to enter his defence.
Karpal was charged under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act for having allegedly uttered seditious words against the Sultan of Perak at his legal firm Messrs Karpal Singh & Co in Jalan Pudu Lama on Feb 6.
He is alleged to have said that the removal of Datuk Seri Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin as Perak mentri besar, and the appointment of Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, by the Sultan could be questioned in a court of law.

All pupils seeking admission to the Bar are required to attend the Ethics and Professional Standards Course and pass the written examination. The two-day Course is held every month. It comprises lectures on specific topics on the first day and a three-hour written examination on the second day, followed by a luncheon.
Most recently, the Course was held on 17 and 18 Mar, 14 and 15 Apr, and 12 and 13 May 2010.

KUALA LUMPUR (June 10, 2010): A Singapore lawyer is here to appeal to Malaysians to save a convicted drug trafficker on death row as he claims the Singapore cabinet had stated he should hang even before he had a chance to present his clemency petition.
Yong Vui Kong, 22, from Sandakan, was sentenced in January 2009 to hang for trafficking in 47gm of heroin. He was 19 when he committed the offence.
At a press conference at the Bar Council here today, Yong's lawyer, M. Ravi, said Article 22(p) of the Singaporean Constitution stated that it was the president of Singapore and not the cabinet who decides on clemency matters.
PUTRAJAYA: A businessman was awarded RM3.3mil in general and exemplary damages after the High Court ruled that the extension of his detention under the Internal Security Act was unlawful and unconstitutional.
Justice Mohd Hishamuddin Mohd Yunus said the court also took into consideration the cost of injury to Badrul Zaman P.S. Mohamed’s reputation as a businessman.
The businessman, in his suit, said he was not challenging the validity of his initial detention order under Section 8(1) of the Internal Security Act (ISA) on Sept 12, 1991 – where he was detained for two years.
