LawCare, We Care E-mail

The objective of LawCare is to provide financial assistance to needy lawyers and their families in situations of death, illness or disability.  The Bar Council first introduced the Lawcare Group Insurance policy on 1 July 2006.  Under the policy, the next-of-kin of a Member of the Malaysian Bar is paid RM30,000 in the event of the Member’s death while in active practice.  LawCare also provides financial assistance to Members suffering partial and permanent disability, or total and permanent disability, arising from sickness, disease or accidents.  Since the insurance scheme only covers members up to the age of 70, in the event of the death of a Member who is above the age of 70, the next-of-kin will be paid RM30,000 directly from the LawCare Fund.

Today, we are in our fifth year of insurance.  Although our insurance coverage has been reduced to RM20,000 due to the high number of claims received, we top up a sum of RM10,000 from the LawCare Fund so that the family of the deceased Member still receives RM30,000.

In addition to this a Benevolent Fund, set up to assist our members who require financial assistance whether due to illness or other reason, has been in existence since 2003.

KUALA LUMPUR (July 11, 2010): Civil society must exert pressure on governments to shun hypocrisy and rise against Israel, Perdana Global Peace Organisation chairman and former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

In his address at the Breaking The Siege: In the Spirit of Rachel Corrie and Mavi Marmara international conference, Mahathir said: "We must call upon all governments not to be hypocritical and stand up to this rogue state called Israel."

He also termed Israel an “apartheid state” which must not be allowed to continue such oppressive policies.

He said the world should not allow an apartheid state to continue its oppression of Palestinians.

PETALING JAYA: The 15th Malaysian Law Conference, scheduled for end of this month has faced a minor setback with the non-attendance of the Prime Minister and several government leaders.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is supposed to deliver the opening address on July 29, would not be attending the three-day conference as he would be overseas. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed that he would be away from July 28.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who is to provide the opening address at the 21st Presidents of Law Association (Pola) conference to be held from July 27-28, is unlikely to attend.

It is also understood that the Attorney-General’s Chambers, including Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, had pulled out of the MLC, sources said.

26 June 2010 was a significant date in the 15th Malaysian Law Conference (MLC 2010)’s calendar.  A wall banner publicising MLC 2010, measuring 19 x 40 ft, was unveiled on that day.  As my colleagues and I stood awe-struck under the blazing sun, watching the yellow crane attach the banner on the side of the Bar Council building on Leboh Pasar Besar, I was hit hard by a realisation.

HRC Responds: Should testing on animals be permitted? E-mail

The Bar Council Human Rights Committee (BCHRC) notes that the issue of animal testing laboratories in Malaysia has yet to be fully resolved and that the latest press report by an English-language daily published on 8 July 2010 states that a meeting of officials from the Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment; Science, Technology and Innovation; Health; and Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry is scheduled to take place later this month.  We offer some thoughts on this matter to assist the aforesaid Ministries in their deliberations.

The BCHRC is of the view that any animal testing laboratory to be set up in Malaysia (be it in Malacca or elsewhere) must at all times adhere to ethical and humane treatment of its test subjects.  Such treatment must be mandated by laws and regulations.  The BCHRC urges Parliament to amend the Animals Act 1953 (amended 2006) to include proper regulations and guidelines with regard to animals used as test subjects in any laboratory or academic faculty for the purposes for medical and scientific testing.  In short, such rules and regulations pertaining to the treatment and holding of animals in a testing laboratory must take into account the fact that the animals must not be subjected to torture and abuse.  The laboratory should keep the pain and suffering of such test subjects to a bare minimum.

THERE should be commitment by companies in the private sector to pay attention to the difference in wages between men and women.

The National Council of Women Organisations wants the disparity addressed as soon as possible through affirmative action on the part of employers.

Deputy president Datuk Ramani Gurusamy said companies should have quota systems as an interim measure to increase the proportion of women at different levels, especially at decision-making levels.

"This is in keeping with the government's policy of working towards at least 30 per cent of women at decision-making levels."

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — As the Najib administration scrambles to revive inter-faith talks that began earlier this year, Malaysia’s multi-religious leaders are refusing to budge until the panel’s name is finalised.

The Cabinet’s Special Committee to Promote Inter-Religious Harmony and Understanding (SCPIRHU) slammed into a brick wall soon after its inaugural meet, after several Muslim groups and muftis baulked at the inclusion of the term “inter-religious”.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon, and the Cabinet committee’s appointed co-ordinator, Datuk Ilani Isahak, have been working behind the scenes quietly persuading religious leaders to head back to the table.
