IKIM VIEWS By Dr WAN AZHAR WAN AHMAD, Senior Fellow/Director, IKIM

Religion has the potential strength to contribute meaningfully to better acceptance of human rights, the two being interdependent forms of social ordering across the world.

THE relationship between religion and human rights (what I personally term human-rightism) is complicated and likely to remain controversial. To foster a better understanding between them, Ikim took the initiative to organise the seminar Religion and Human Rights: Towards a Better Understanding in June.

Fifteen papers were deliberated, including a keynote address by Mashood A. Baderin, Professor of Law and Head of the School of Law, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Mashood, who specialises in human rights, Islamic Law and international human rights law, is a prolific scholar on the subject matter, with books and numerous articles as well as paper presentations all over the world.

PETALING JAYA: Public feedback is still being sought for the third-party motor insurance to ensure it is fair for both consumers and the industry, said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai.

He said the draft policy was expected to be finalised either by the end of the year or early next year to allow more time for the public, private sector and insurance industry players to provide feedback on the framework.

“We want to ensure that the rakyat does not face bureaucracy during the claiming process as some are experiencing now,” he told reporters yesterday after launching the book ‘Industry Elites’ at the Lexus Malaysia showroom.

A THREE-PRONGED approach has been put in place to ensure that the National Key Results Area for Corruption (Corruption NKRA) is achieved in line with the government's effort against corrupt practices.

The NKRA for Corruption aims to reestablish the people's confidence in regulatory and enforcement agencies, reduce leakages in government procurement and tackle grand corruption.

Various plans were launched under the initiative to wipe clean the sticky fingers. This includes the introduction and strengthening of compliance units.

This is one of the 26 initiatives by the NKRA Corruption Laboratory to tackle malpractice in the regulatory and enforcement agencies, as well as government procurement.
