PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) has called for improved security arrangements at police stations, following the attack by five assailants at the Labis police station on Saturday.
MCPF vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said there must not be any security lapses at police stations.
“Stringent checks on visitors are needed but policemen must be friendly to the public as well,” he said yesterday.
While the incident in Labis was an isolated one, Lee said more precautions should be taken but not at the expense of the public.
Meanwhile, Safer Malaysia chairman Richard Wee said the attack at the Labis police station and another on security guards in Cheras have to be addressed as they concerned public safety.
“It matters not who was attacked, as every crime is just plain wrong but the fact that a policeman and security guards were victims just amplifies the extent of crime in Malaysia at the moment.
STAYING indoors is certainly not the way to go for women runners who fear for their safety each time they head out to a park.
“Women runners need a safer place to run where they can also bring their kids,” said Karen Loh, who helped organise an awareness campaign in the Bukit Gasing park recently.
The event was organised in the wake of Irene Ong’s death last month after she was robbed and stabbed during a visit to the park in Section 5, Petaling Jaya.
Loh, who is also the founder of Malaysia Women Marathon, said the group intends to use sport as an avenue to reach out to Malaysians in hopes of keeping parks free of crime.
More than 200 participants joined in the effort. They also signed a memorandum that was later passed to Safer Malaysia chairman Richard Wee, who told the crowd not to put the blame for the incident on the police but instead, urged them to do better in serving the community in the future.
COMMENT Like many Malaysiakini readers, I was appalled at the remarks made by the new Home Affairs Minister, Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, vice-president of Umno, with regard to those who questioned the fact that Barisan Nasional lost the popular vote but still won a majority of the seats in the Dewan Rakyat.
He basically told them that if they didn't like the result, they could leave.
His clear disrespect for the right of Malaysians to freedom of expression, coming as it does as he takes up his new position, is a negative harbinger of things to come.
However, a careful study of his article published in Utusan Malaysia on May 16, 2013 reveals more egregious remarks which are unbefitting a minister of government.
The main accusation of Zahid (left) really is that those who favour proportional representation (PR), and in particular its manifestation in the list system and the single transferable vote (STV), are disloyal to the country.
PETALING JAYA (May 16): Newly-appointed Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has "lost touch with reality on the ground and with the people", said Bersih 2.0 co-chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.
"This is a bad start for the new home minister as he evidently does not appreciate the difference between rule of law and rule by law.
"When you uphold the rule of law as he must, you respect the fundamentals as freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom of assembly," Ambiga told fz.com.
Ahmad Zahid, in his maiden column in mainstream daily Utusan Malaysia, wrote that Malaysians who are unhappy with the country’s political system should leave the country.
He also said Pakatan Rakyat was "irresponsible" for "confusing young Chinese voters and their supporters who are "politically blind" into donning black clothing as a sign of protest against the results of GE13 which they believe was won by Pakatan due to its bigger share in popular vote.
KUALA LUMPUR: Student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim has been remanded for five days until May 23 following his arrest for sedition.
City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the remand order was to help police investigate Adam Adli on statements he made during a May 13 forum held at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
“He was arrested in Bangsar at 3.15pm on Saturday under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act over the statements he made during the forum,” he said when contacted Sunday.
Eye-witnesses reported that he was picked up by about ten plain clothes policemen outside a grocery shop at Bangsar and driven off in a large four-wheel-drive to the Jinjang police detention centre.
Adam Adli previously made headlines for bringing down a flag bearing a picture of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak outside the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre in 2011.
He was suspended from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris on Jan 9 last year for three semesters, which will end in September.

PUTRAJAYA: The Attorney-General's Chambers is almost done handling most of the offence cases committed during the 13th General Election.
Deputy Solicitor-General II Datuk Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah yesterday said the number had reduced significantly after the general election and that cases that were with the chambers were still under investigation.
"There has been a dip in the number of cases since the general election.
"The ones that are still with us are cases that were directed from earlier investigations during the election period."
PETALING JAYA: PKR communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has been charged under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for alleged failure to inform the district police regarding the location of a recent Opposition rally.
